The PET Recycling Process: From Waste to Resource


The industrial recycling journey typically involves the following key steps:
- Collection and Sorting
The process begins with collecting post-consumer PET bottles and packaging from various sources. At recycling facilities, the materials undergo rigorous sorting. Advanced systems (often using optical sensors) separate PET from other plastics like PVC or PP, and sort them by color (e.g., clear vs. colored). Removing contaminants at this early stage is crucial for maintaining the quality of the final product.
- Washing and Cleaning
Once sorted, the bottles are thoroughly washed to remove any impurities. Industrial machines strip away labels, caps, adhesives, dirt, and residual liquids. A hot wash and friction cleaning process is often used to eliminate grease, sugars, and glue residues. This deep cleaning ensures that the resulting material meets strict hygiene and safety standards.
- Crushing and Flaking
The clean bottles are then fed into crushers that break them down into small pieces called “flakes.” These flakes serve as the fundamental base material for the next stages. Consistent flake size helps ensure uniform washing and drying results.
- Melting and Reprocessing (Pelletizing)
The cleaned flakes are dried and melted down. Manufacturers reshape the molten plastic into small pellets or sheets. During this phase, strict quality controls—including filtration and sometimes solid-state polycondensation (SSP)—are applied to ensure the material achieves food-grade safety standards.
- Manufacturing New Products
Finally, these high-quality PET pellets are ready to be manufactured into new products. They can be turned into new beverage bottles, food containers, eco-friendly cups, or even spun into fibers for clothing (such as sportswear and T-shirts).
